Bicycling Dangers in Clovis

Bicyclists have some bike trails and bike lanes to take advantage of in Clovis. But on some routes, they must take to the lanes alongside fast-moving cars, SUVs, and Trucks. Riders have the same rights to the lanes that motorists do, but drivers don’t always show cyclists the care that’s necessary to keep them safe.

Drivers can glance at an email on their phones and veer over onto a cyclist. They can also fail to pay enough attention to spot riders using the street and then turn directly in front of them.

California transportation officials track the frightening bicycle accidents in Clovis each year. In 2021, there were 19 bicycle crashes involving injury across Clovis. That number increased slightly to 23 serious bicycle accidents in 2022.

That’s not a number that a small city like Clovis can be proud of. It’s on every driver to yield to the rights of cyclists when they must share the road. Fresno County drivers should slow down and never pass a defenseless rider unless there is plenty of room to do so.
