Weekend Motorcycle Accident Involving DUI on Panama Lane in Bakersfield

A motorcyclist suffered major injuries after a collision with a pick-up truck in southern Bakersfield Saturday night. Bakersfield police officers responded to the scene at the intersection of Panama Lane and Ashe Road sometime around 9:18 p.m. on March 1, 2023.

23ABC-TV reported that investigators found the motorcyclist lying in the roadway. Officers say both the truck and the rider were traveling west on Panama Lane when the pick-up struck the motorcycle. The truck then went out of control and struck a building and a fire hydrant. The accident flooded the street with water.

The rider involved was rushed to the hospital with what were thought to be life-threatening injuries. The pickup truck driver was not injured.

The driver involved remained on the scene to cooperate with investigators. Police officers say that speed and alcohol were factors in this accident.

DUI-Involved Accidents in Bakersfield

Drunk drivers and drivers who get behind the wheel while on drugs put every other motorist around them at risk. The actions and maneuvers of an impaired motorist are hard to predict and anticipate. Even safe riders and drivers paying full attention to the road often don’t get enough warning to steer clear of a mistake made by a DUI driver.

In new data from California transportation officials, 2022 saw a dangerous number of impaired motorists out on Bakersfield roads. 202 serious traffic accidents involving drunk drivers were recorded on local roads in 2022. Nine of those crashes involved someone on a motorcycle. At least seven people in these incidents lost their lives.

Drunk drivers put all motorists in jeopardy, but motorcyclists travel the roads while very vulnerable. They can suffer a strike from a car or truck and then be sent to the ground for a second impact. Riders may have a helmet on but will have little other protection from severe internal and external injuries.
