New Year’s Eve Pedestrian Collision on Forest Ave in San Jose Claims a Man’s Life

A pedestrian lost his life in a tragic collision involving a truck on New Year’s Eve in San Jose. NBC Bay Area reports the accident occurred on Forest Avenue near Redwood Avenue on Saturday, December 31, 2022.

San Jose Police responded to the collision sometime after 7:30 p.m. near the Westfield Valley Fair Mall. They determined that a driver in a GMC pickup truck had struck a man crossing the road.

The victim was rushed to the hospital where he later died. The truck’s driver remained on the scene to cooperate with the investigation.

The San Jose Police Department continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. They don’t believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in what happened.

Hazards for San Jose Pedestrians During the Holiday Rush

San Jose Police said this was the 63rd fatal traffic collision of 2022. It was also the 32nd fatal accident involving a pedestrian for the year.

California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) documented 45 fatal traffic accident victims in San Jose in 2021. That included 14 pedestrians who tragically lost their lives.

It will be a while into 2023 before the final 2022 accident statistics are available, but by these early counts, it appears that pedestrian accident incidents went in the wrong direction in 2022. Let’s hope that San Jose drivers will use more caution in 2023 and that the number of accident victims drops dramatically.

Improvement is critical to the San Jose community. Dangerous pedestrian accidents leave victims to face long and difficult recoveries. In the worst cases, families are left to mourn the loss of a loved one.

Drivers should know that they are under a legal obligation to show those on foot extreme care at all times. Motorists must constantly monitor for those walking in the street or near it. They are required to slow down as much as needed to avoid any impact with a defenseless pedestrian. Drivers can be held financially liable for any crash involving a pedestrian, even when the person on foot wasn’t in a crosswalk.
