Multi-Car Accident on Hwy 17 in Santa Clara County Claims One Life

A multi-vehicle collision in western Santa Clara County tragically claimed one life and injured at least one other victim Sunday night. KION46-TV reports the tragic crash occurred along Highway 17 near the Bear Creek Road intersection on November 13, 2022.

The California Highway Patrol says the accident took place in the southbound lanes just before 10 p.m. Officers say that four or five vehicles were involved in the crash.

One person was declared dead at the scene. Another victim was rushed to the hospital with what were described as major injuries. No information about the victims has been released.

The CHP closed the southbound lanes to conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the chain-reaction accident. The lanes have since been reopened.

Multi-Car Accident Dangers in Santa Clara County

Santa Clara County’s divided highways with solid cement medians are often the site of devastating accidents. Drivers can have barriers on both sides of the lanes, leaving them little space to steer clear of any accidents that occur nearby.

One small fender-bender by two cars can quickly lead to a multi-car crash as vehicles approach the scene from behind. Highway 17 is one such highway that doesn’t always leave motorists room to maneuver when an obstacle suddenly appears in their lane.

In 2021, 123 accidents involving injury occurred along Highway 17 through Santa Clara County. That’s according to the California Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS).

Highway 17 is the major route between San Jose and Santa Cruz. It’s a busy highway that can leave those on a weekend excursion racing to get home after a fun weekend.

Motorists may be anxious to wrap up a road trip, but every driver must remember the role they play in the safety of other drivers and passengers. Keeping a check on speeding and aggressive driving will also help everyone return home safely and securely.
