Stop Sign Violation Causes Fiery Crash on Cedar Avenue in Fresno County

A fiery weekend traffic collision claimed three lives and left another person with injuries in Fresno County, south of Fresno. The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene shortly before 1:47 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, September 18, 2022.

KSEE-TV reported the accident involved a two-vehicle collision at the two-way stop intersection of Cedar Avenue and Floral Avenue. CHP investigators say that an SUV was traveling westbound on Floral when it ran a stop sign. The SUV crossed into the path of a flatbed truck traveling southbound on Cedar with the right-of-way. The collision overturned both vehicles and left both engulfed in flames.

The three people inside the SUV tragically died at the scene. A surviving victim of the crash was transported to the hospital with what were believed to be moderate injuries.

The California Highway Patrol continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the devastating accident.

Stop Sign Violation Accident Dangers in Fresno County

Two-way stop intersections work well as long as motorists who must stop obey the right-of-way. They are also responsible for staying at rest until looking in every direction and determining that they have space to proceed. When this basic caution is ignored, violent collisions become more and more likely.

California transportation officials track accidents at stop signs and other traffic signs in Fresno County each year. In 2021, 376 accidents involving injuries were blamed on drivers who didn’t obey stop signs, traffic lights, and other signs. Those accidents claimed 10 lives across Fresno County.

Motorists coming up on intersections where they aren’t required to stop should be able to trust that vehicles coming from other directions will obey all traffic laws. It’s critical that all drivers in Fresno pay more attention to the roads and start giving other motorists enough room to get home safely.
