Motorcyclist Killed In Collision with Bee Truck in Tuolumne County CA

A Modesto motorcyclist was tragically killed after a collision with a pickup truck carrying bees in western Tuolumne County Monday night. The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene sometime after 9:50 p.m. on August 22, 2022.

The Union Democrat reported the accident happened along Highway 108 a couple of miles west of the La Grange Road junction. Investigators says the collision took place when a 62-year-old man from Oakdale attempted to drive his Chevy pickup across Highway 108 from Rushing Hill Lookout Road. As the truck crossed the highway it was struck on the passenger side by a man on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle traveling westbound.

The rider, a 67-year-old man from Modesto, was sent from his motorcycle. The victim was wearing a helmet but died of his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the truck was not injured. The truck was transporting beekeeper boxes containing live bees and one of the boxes was cracked. The California Highway Patrol officer on the scene said that no one was badly stung. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is ongoing.

Motorcycle Accident Dangers in Tuolumne County

Tuolumne County offers beautiful rides for motorcyclists and it’s difficult to consider the risks careless drivers can represent to riders while they are doing something they love.

Any driver can become careless and taking too short a look in all directions and in mirrors before performing a traffic maneuver. They too often miss spotting a defenseless rider and move into the path of a motorcycle. Motorcyclists are left with too little time to brake or steer clear of a devastating impact.

California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) tracks motorcycle accidents across Tuolumne County each year. TIMS recorded 44 motorcycle accidents involving injury across the county in 2021. Those accidents led to at least one tragic death. The accident number was up from 2020 when officials documented 41 accidents, and sadly, at least 2 tragic motorcycle crash fatalities.

With the beautiful motorcycle routes across Tuolumne County, it’s critical that drivers learn to monitor their surroundings at all times. This extra attention can help prevent many motorcycle accidents and help riders avoid serious injuries and heartbreaking deaths.

A word about motorcycle accidents in Tuolumne County…

If you lost a loved one in a tragic motorcycle accident, you should be aware of the benefits available to you and your family through an insurance claim.

A wrongful death claim filed against an at-fault driver’s car insurance provider should offer full support to a grieving family. This civil claim provides help with funeral costs, emergency response fees, and the loss of income the deceased will no longer be able to provide a spouse or children in the years ahead.
