Three Vehicle Collision on Highway 1 Claims One Life Near Morro Bay

A Turlock woman lost her life in a three-vehicle accident along the California coast over the weekend. The California Highway Patrol says the tragic accident occurred on Saturday evening on Highway 1 south of Morro Bay in San Luis Obispo County on February 26, 2022.

The San Luis Obispo Tribune reported the collision took place around 6:20 p.m. at the intersection of San Luisito Creek Road. Investigators say a 71-year-old man from Turlock, driving vehicle #1, was in the turn lane to make a left-hand turn onto San Luisito Creek Road. The vehicle turned in front of a 50-year-old Visalia man driving vehicle #2 in the southbound lanes.

Vehicle #2 struck Vehicle #1 on the right side. Vehicle #3, a car driven by a 66-year-old woman from Morro Bay, then struck Vehicle #2 from behind. A female passenger in vehicle #3 who has not been identified later died after being transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.

Three other people involved in the accident were transported to the same hospital, all with major injuries. CHP investigators are still working to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Highway 1 Accident Dangers in San Luis Obispo County

Highway 1 is the largest state highway in California and the second-largest state route in the entire nation. It connects some of California’s biggest metropolitan areas and also covers some beautiful coastline scenery.

Unfortunately, careless drivers also make it a prime highway for dangerous collisions. People turning across traffic, making u-turns, or just switching lanes can put unsuspecting drivers and passengers in great danger.

The California Transportation Injury Mapping System tracks accidents in San Luis Obispo County each year. In 2020, they recorded 364 total accidents on state highways like Highway 1 and Highway 58. Sadly, those accidents resulted in at least 9 deaths and injured 502 people over the year.

Speed limits and patrols can only do so much to keep people safe. It’s up to careless and reckless drivers to return their focus to the highway and to slow down.
