Head-On Collision Sends Two To The Hospital In Santa Barbara

A devastating weekend head-on collision in Santa Barbara left two people suffering injuries. The Santa Barbara City Fire Department responded to the scene shortly after 8:20 p.m. on Sunday night on November 14, 2021.

Noozhawk reported the accident occurred on Carrillo Street, east of Miramonte Drive in southern Santa Barbara. The collision involved two cars and both were left with major front-end damage.

The two drivers were the only occupants of the vehicles. The two men were rushed by AMR Ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. One victim reportedly had major injuries.

The Santa Barbara Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the collision.

Santa Barbara Traffic Accident Dangers

Santa Barbara’s hilly terrain and narrow lanes can leave little room to avoid the mistakes of careless and reckless drivers. A distracted or aggressive driver may wind up inching into the lane you are occupying. An oncoming vehicle could end up crossing over the centerline to put you and your passengers in jeopardy.

The California Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) tracks the accidents occurring in Santa Barbara County each year. In 2020, they recorded 337 total traffic accidents in Santa Barbara causing 433 injuries and tragically claiming one life. Of those accidents, 16 were documented as involving a head-on impact. Those head-on collisions resulted in 22 injuries.

Head-on collisions are thankfully not as common as rear-end and side-impact collisions. This is a good thing because head-on collisions are one of the most devastating outcomes among potential vehicle impacts.

Frontal impacts multiply the collision force, using the speeds of both cars to increase the harm done to vehicles and the people inside. Head and brain injuries, broken bones, and internal organ damage are all more common in a head-on collision.

All drivers must do their best to keep their eyes on the road ahead so they know when their vehicles have veered over a double-yellow line and into oncoming traffic. These collisions are powerful and can do extreme harm to the occupants of any vehicles involved.

A word about traffic accidents in Santa Barbara…

After a serious collision, it’s important that victims and their family members are aware of the rights they have and the insurance benefits available to them.
