San Jose: Tragic Hit and Run Accident Kills Cyclist

A cyclist was tragically killed in a hit-and-run collision late Tuesday night in southern San Jose. The accident happened just before 10 p.m. on the 1500 Block of Kooser Road in a residential area near Blossom Hill Road and Camden Avenue on May 4, 2021.

The San Jose Police Department responded to the accident and reported it as a pedestrian traffic fatality. KRON4-TV reported that a witness saw someone who had been on a bicycle get rammed by a driver who then drove away from the scene. Other witnesses stopped to provide help to the victim.

Investigators have not released word on if they’ve located the driver or the vehicle involved. So far no description of the driver and vehicle has been released. If you have any information about this tragic incident you should call the San Jose Police Department.

Officers say this is the 16th traffic fatality in San Jose in 2021. Tuesday’s accident follows a similar pedestrian hit-and-run occurring just last week in San Jose.

Pedestrian and Cycling Traffic Dangers in San Jose

Pedestrians and people who travel on bicycles are exposed to extreme danger when they have to contend with San Jose drivers. Motorists can become distracted by almost anything and have their eyes off the road in front of them. A cellphone may be the culprit, or a radio, or a conversation with a passenger.

This inattention is especially hazardous at night when drivers need to stay even more focused on the road to make sure they spot anyone who may be in front of them.

California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) recorded 218 traffic collisions involving pedestrians in 2020. Those accidents resulted in 234 injuries and claimed a heartbreaking six lives over the year.

People on bicycles also faced hazardous conditions in 2020. There were 178 traffic accidents involving cyclists in San Jose. Fortunately, according to TIMS records, no cyclist was killed in San Jose in 2020, but 185 victims were injured in those accidents.

Too many of these tragic accidents involve a driver who decides to speed away after hitting someone. This inexcusable act puts the victim in even more danger and only magnifies the emotional anguish and financial burden for the families left behind.

Seeking Legal Advice After a Tragic Accident in San Jose

Families should be allowed the time they need to grieve after losing a loved one to a terrible accident. A tragedy is made even worse when a hit-and-run driver goes free and escapes the consequences of his or her actions.

Families will wonder how to find justice and find support for all of the costs that can arise after a hit-and-run collision. There are legal options available to help families including filing a wrongful death claim to assist victims even if a hit-and-run driver goes unidentified.

If you or a family member is ever the victim of an accident be sure to speak to an attorney in your area. You can visit our page about car accidents in San Jose for more information.
