Liability in Madera County Stop Sign Intersection Accidents on Hwy 152

A stop sign violation in Madera County led to a tragic death Tuesday morning. The California Highway Patrol was called to the intersection of Highway 152 and Road 16 south of Chowchilla.

ABC30-TV reported the major collision occurred just before 7 a.m. on December 13, 2022. Investigators determined that the driver of a Ford Mustang on Road 16 ran a stop sign and hit the side of a Honda.

The driver of the Honda, a man said to be in his 50s, was rushed to the hospital where he later died. The driver of the Mustang is expected to be okay.

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. They don’t believe drugs or alcohol played a role in what happened.

Madera County Accident Hazards When Drivers Run Stop Signs

The long, straight roads in rural Madera County can lull drivers into an unfocused state. They can miss spotting a stop sign up ahead and race across an intersection and into traffic without even tapping the brakes. These mistakes lead to devastating accidents and victims and their families suffer severe consequences.

The California Transportation Injury Mapping System tracks accidents across Madera County each week. Their data shows that 742 traffic accidents involving injury occurred in 2021 in Madera County. 36 people tragically lost their lives in those collisions. Sadly, 41 of those 2021 accidents were attributed to drivers who failed to obey traffic lights or signs.

When a motorist runs a stop sign or a red light it leaves even careful drivers little time to react and steer clear of an impact. Victims can suffer severe injuries and even life-threatening trauma.
