Pedestrian Tragically Killed After Getting Struck Twice on Belmont Ave in Fresno

A woman tragically lost her life in a pedestrian accident that may have involved two drivers in Fresno over the weekend. Police responded to the deadly hit-and-run around 12:45 a.m. early Saturday morning on October 15, 2022. Officers say they got a call from a man who said he had hit a person with his car.

ABC30-TV reports the accident took place near the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Echo Avenue. Police determined that a woman in her 50s had been struck and killed. The man who called police stayed on the scene to cooperate with investigators.

During the investigation, detectives located evidence that indicated the woman had been hit by another car before the collision under investigation. They continue to look for a hit-and-run driver responsible for the first strike on the victim.

Fresno Pedestrians Accident Dangers

Fresno pedestrians walking at night must face additional dangers as they interact with sometimes careless and reckless drivers in the city. Those on foot can find they are several blocks from a safe crosswalk. They can also be in poorly lit sections of city streets that leave them less visible to distracted drivers.

These dangers and others place pedestrians at constant risk as they travel Fresno. In some ways, the dangers only appear to be getting worse from year to year.

In 2020, California transportation officials documented 116 total pedestrian accidents involving injury in Fresno. In 2021, that number jumped to 136 incidents. In 2020, 33 pedestrians lost their lives in Fresno. In 2021, the number of deadly accidents fell to 12 victims.

The truth is that pedestrian accident numbers in Fresno are unacceptable every year. City transportation workers should work to build more crosswalks and pedestrian bridges for those that walk the city. Drivers must also be held accountable and get constant reminders to pay full attention to the road, sidewalks, and crosswalks. They must slow down at the sight of anyone on foot in order to prevent these devastating collisions.
