Bicycling Accident Dangers in Modesto
When cyclists in Modesto are on a street without a bike lane, they have a right to the lanes just as any car does. Motorists in the city don’t always respect this right and can place riders in dangerous spots with their careless driving.
Drivers owe all cyclists a duty of care. They must always monitor for a defenseless rider. When motorists spot someone on a bike, they must slow down to prevent an accident. When they don’t offer this basic caution, drivers can be held liable for the harm caused to cyclists, no matter where they are encountered.
California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) found that in 2019, Modesto documented 88 bicycle accidents involving injury. In 2020, the number of serious crash incidents dipped slightly to 64 cases. That number jumped back up to 79 accident cases in 2021.
Motorists can’t leave it to chance that 2022 bicycle accident numbers will begin a downward trend in collisions involving vulnerable riders. It’s critical that drivers pay extra attention to the lanes when a cyclist is nearby. They must slow down to allow a rider the chance to make it home safely on every trip.
