Over the past months, consumers who found themselves unemployed have begun researching health insurance coverage opportunities that are available and affordable for those who are jobless, but when COBRA health insurance benefits have either expired or become too costly, alternatives have had to be explored by men and women who are still facing long-term unemployment issues. While some have been fortunate enough to find health insurance through a spouse’s health insurance plan, many have had to turn to alternative options outside of COBRA benefits or the security that was once provided by their employer’s group health insurance policy.
While the topic of short-term health insurance has been covered in great detail over the past months, there are options from simple personal health insurance plans that may be available to unemployed individuals or even those who may be without health insurance coverage from their employer. Yet, some unemployed men and women have avoided a simple personal health insurance plan due to the fact that they can be more expensive in terms of monthly premiums than a short-term health insurance plan, but for those who are in a position where they can afford these costs, more comprehensive coverage may be gained.
The problems outside of cost that consumers are currently facing here at the end of June and heading into July usually center around preexisting health conditions, but there are states that have insurance options available for consumers who are finding it difficult to acquire health insurance due to ailments they currently have, and there are health insurance exchanges that are already in place to help these men and women.
For consumers who simply may need basic coverage though, options are available that may be more affordable on a state to state basis, so this is where a consumer must begin when looking for a personal health insurance plan while they are unemployed, as major insurers may have different pricing structures or plans available depending on what state a consumer happens to live in. Yet, this is where exploring these plans and comparing rates that are available for a particular individual will be necessary, as consumers will need to do detailed research into what their plan covers before selecting a specific policy.
While this may seem like common sense, some consumers will see a plan that looks okay, comes with a decent price tag, and simply proceed forward in acquiring health insurance coverage under that specific policy, but they must take caution and be certain they understand how much of a doctor or hospital bill their particular insurance plan will pay, what are the monthly premiums, and what deductibles must be met as well. Also, for consumers who may visit the doctor multiple times throughout the year, there are some policies that may have higher costs related to simple office visits, preventive care screenings, or other aspects of insurance coverage like vision and dental.
Sorting through these options may take time but it will be necessary so that consumers do not select a plan that will be somewhat affordable but does not meet their needs in case they must file an insurance claim due to illness, injury, or a simple routine visit. While individual health insurance policies can be much costlier than a short-term health insurance plan or even what an employee was contributing to an employer plan, for those who are without health insurance coverage and looking for a job, they can guard against excessive medical expenses were a medical emergency to arise, and personal health insurance options are obviously a safer route to take than risking having to meet costs out-of-pocket if medical treatment were needed while uninsured.
