Can Unemployed Deduct Job Search Expenses Income Tax—Look Into Your Tax Options

Many people who worked some last year or received a certain amount of unemployment may have to pay taxes, even if their income was a small amount or only from unemployment benefits.  However, those who are in the position of paying taxes on unemployment may be able to deduct expenses for seeking a job.

An article from cnnmoney.com raises a great question about what can be considers a deduction for those that may be unemployed but still seeking a job and spending money to do so.  Anyone who is unemployed knows that there can be a great amount of cost associated with job-hunting so you may be able to reduce what you owe on your income taxes by making the correct deductions.

Costs like printing, travel, and phone calls, among other things, tend to add up and most can be deducted.  Taking with a tax agent, going online, or looking over the IRS website is going to be necessary to get the fine details that are specific to you, your income tax, and unemployment benefits.

However, your time and effort will be worth it.  If you are going to owe on your taxes you should at least try to find deductions for seeking a job.  Many people have turned job-hunting into full-time work, so there should be compensation for their efforts.
