Many unemployed men and women were relieved to hear of the 30-day unemployment benefits extension passed by the Senate, but with the time it took to get that piece of legislation passed many were worried about what would become of the next 30 days. Passing a much longer extension has been on the mind of many unemployed and members of Congress as well, but there were people that worried about such an extension being passed before the end of the 30-day extension.
Reports are that the long-term extension of unemployment benefits will be addressed and possibly passed this week, which may give aid to many who are hoping for and in need of assistance with even the most basic necessities. There are still worries and concerns over who will get an extension and who will run out of benefits, but a long-term extension is going to be of great help to many that are struggling in one of the worst job markets in recent history.
While there are critics of unemployment, there is no argument that without unemployment benefits there could be millions who would suffer as a result and the economy would likely suffer as well. However, what the vast majority of unemployed men and women want is a job.
Until the major issues of the job market and employers are addressed, and employers have more confidence in the economy, there will be no improvement. Jobs, despite what many say, are simply not available for those in need. People complain of seeing help wanted signs and knowing of companies that are hiring, but the number of people looking for work compared to job openings isn’t even comparable. When people were laid off by the thousands or tens-of-thousands it created a flood of men and women in need of jobs that simply can’t open fast enough to combat those kinds of numbers.
However, the passage of long-term unemployment benefits will hopefully help all those individuals who are looking for work, but just can’t find anything in our current job market.
