Many unemployed men and women want to return to school, or go for the first time, in the hopes that furthering their education or training is going to aid them in the search for a better job or even just a job at all.  However, many people fear they will be unable to obtain the grants or scholarships needed to afford the costs of returning to school and worry that student loans will put them in a worse financial position than they were in before.

Yet, student loans can be very affordable at the present time and even if you leave school with multiple student loans you can still consolidate student loans, which can bring a lower interest rate and make repayment easier.  Also, after college, there is a grace period in which you don’t have to pay on your student loans so you will not have to immediately begin paying back your loans in most cases.

Also, like millions of college graduates who entered an unfriendly job market, a forbearance or deferment period is available, in some cases, up to three years, so you do have options if you don’t find employment right out of school.

Always look for scholarships and financial aid first and exhaust all the options you have available.  Talk to financial aid advisors at your school and see if they can offer any additional information about financial aid as well.  While, student loans are never the best route, they can pay off greatly by giving you the means to pay for a degree that lands you a great job.  However, do your research and look at your personal financial situation before making any big decisions.

There are ways to either delay or make your student loan repayment more affordable, but in the end it is debt that must be paid so make the decision that is going to be best for you.
