Google may end operations in China due to censorship issues. An attack by hackers that tried access Gmail accounts in relation to Google’s Chinese site may have been the spark that lit the fire as Google says they are going to meet with government officials to discuss censoring their content.
The attack by a supposed Iranian “cyber army, also took down China’s number one search engine, Baidu, leaving the site offline for hours when it was discovered logging onto Baidu brought users to the cyber attackers banner page.
Despite the attack, which has opened many people’s eyes to the reach of these hackers, Google is saying they are looking into pulling their operations from the Chinese market due to censorship conflicts, more specifically for human rights sites.
Gmail accounts for human rights activists were targeted by the hackers and it is this reason that Google is unwilling to continue their operations as is in China and they have stated that unless something is done in the area of freedom of speech they will most likely have to pull up stakes and move on.
While Baidu is the leading search engine in China, basically the Chinese equivalent of Google in America, Google has only about 20% of China’s search market. This, however, is said not to factor into the reason to possibly leave China as Google sees their lack of being first in China as just more room to grow.
